Escape from Dagger Tower – Athena Game Jam April 2023

In this project I worked as a Technical Games Designer to develop the puzzle elements to the game. The game is a Co-Op escape room where each player has to complete puzzles some together and some solo to get crystals to balance the door open to escape.
I made this in a team of 4. Joel Flemming (Art), Jordan Peart (Design), and Matthew Thompson (Design).

I worked on two of the main puzzle elements as well as the scale mechanics to allow the players to escape.

The scales would be able to take any weigh-able object and give the player its resulting weight. If the crystals are placed on top and it equaled to the goal weight and both players did this then it would unlock the doors.

The Colour Pattern puzzle is one that randomizes the colours and you need to complete the right combo which the other player has to reward your self with the crystal. If you complete it out of order then you would have to restart. This puzzle was a tricky to get right as I had to track the correct order while being randomized on level load. This taught me alot about using arrays and randomization of them.

The last element I worked on was a pillar puzzle where you had to get one player to keep track of the light pulses and then tell the other player to alter the pillar to get the right number five times. This would result in the player being rewarded with a crystal.

This game jam taught me a lot of about producing a game that is you own idea that you have a very tight deadline for. It also helped me manage scope and making sure it wouldn’t get too big of a project for the 5 days we had to build the game.
